About: national city, california
National City is located in southern California in San Diego County. It is the second oldest city in San Diego County, giving it an historic past. When the Spanish had control over California, the Spanish soldiers used El Rancho del Rey, meaning "the Ranch of the King" in Spanish, to graze their horses. National City now sits where this ranch once existed. When Mexico gained its independence from Spain he name was changed to Rancho de la Nacion, or "Ranch of the Nation" in English. After the sale of the land in 1845, President Andrew Johnson listed the name as "The National Ranch."
