In the 1800s, Meriden, Connecticut, was nicknamed "The Silver City." This was because there were a large number of cutlery and related products, which were manufactured in Meriden by companies such as International Silver and Meriden Cutlery. Also, in 1832, Charles Parker and his brother founded a manufacturing factory that produced steam engines, train wheels, printing presses, and piano stools. The factory was named Parker's Meriden Machine Company. During the Civil War, the company was contracted by the Union to produce over 10,000 repeating rifles and 15,000 Springfield rifles.

A Connecticut man is going to spend more than a year behind bars after pleading guilty to defrauding four manufacturing companies out of more than $600,000. John Durham, the United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced on Monday that Meriden resident Digby Kerr, 50, has been sentenced to 12 months and one day in prison, followed by three years of supervised release after pleading guilty to wire fraud for a scheme that defrauded manufacturing companies.
