Salina was established in 1860 as prospectors traveling to Pikes Peak in hopes of gold began to settle in the area. It also began as a trading post between the local native tribes and Fort Leavenworth, a US Army post. After the Civil War, the Union Pacific Railroad built tracks through Salina in 1867. The city began transporting meat in refrigerated railroad cars. In the 1870s wheat became a leading crop and a steam powered flour mill was constructed.

Colleges cooperate in providing transfer agreements

As higher education expenses have exploded, however, more students are electing to begin their college education at a less-expensive two-year college before transferring to a four-year institution. Through transfer or articulation agreements, Salina-area colleges are working to make it easier for students to transfer credits from one institution to another and, in the process, cut down on the cost of higher education.

Andrew 'Andy' Milbourn

Andrew Milbourn was born in Salina, Kan., Feb 22, 1924, and died peacefully Dec. 22, 2016, in Shawnee Kan. at age 92. Andy was preceded in death by his grandparents, David & Sarah Milbourn; his parents, Andrew and Nola Milbourn; six brothers, David, Henry , Kenny, Vernie, Lloyd and Floyd Milbourn; two sisters, Fern C. Akes and Velma Chivington; two sons, Dan Hoffman, of Appleton, Wis., and Michael Andrew Milbourn, of Richmond; one grandson, Andy Milbourn, of Kansas City; and spouses, Delores Milbourn, Peggy Milbourn and Barbara Milbourn.

SALINA, KANSAS, U.S. Loren Neil Peterson, 87, founder of Vortex and an innovator in dry bulk solids handling, died Jan. 29. Peterson's career in dry bulk solids began in the 1950s with Salina Manufacturing . As a mechanical engineer he developed formulas for conveying material other than flour, which was unproven at that time.
