In unprecedented move, Rancho Palos Verdes City Council approves subpoena for former mayor's emails

The change comes amid a battle over legal costs against a former mayor.

The Rancho Palos Verdes City Council on Tuesday night voted to replace City Attorney Dave Aleshire with his law firm partner, Bill Wynder. While Wynder will be taking over the bulk of the position's duties and the title, Aleshire will remain on board to finish larger projects related to the Portuguese Bend Landslide and the citizen-led effort to make Rancho Palos Verdes a charter city.

Los Angeles County is being sued by the father of a Torrance high school baseball player who alleges a 911 operator encouraged a driver to continue chasing a hit-run driver, ultimately leading to a second crash that killed the plaintiff's 16-year-old son. The father of the late Jesse Eric Esphorst also is suing Caltrans, the city of Torrance, driver Darryl Leander Hicks Jr., 29, of Los Angeles, who is accused of fleeing the scene of the March 7, 2017 crash that killed the South High School student, and 22-year-old motorist Tung Ming of Rancho Palos Verdes, who allegedly was urged by the 911 operator to maintain his pursuit of Hicks.

Memorial planned for Carson man killed in Port of Long Beach accident

A public memorial is planned Monday for a 55-year-old Carson resident who was fatally injured last week in a collision between two yard tractors in the Port of Long Beach. Bert Tufele, a longshoreman since 2004, was ejected from the cab of his utility tractor rig and caught under the truck's wheels minutes before the end of his shift at 3 a.m. Nov. 4. Family, friends and co-workers at Local 13 of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, where Tufele was a member, have planned a viewing from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 14 at First Christian Church, 444 E. Lomita Blvd. in Wilmington.
