About: meriden, connecticut
In the 1800s, Meriden, Connecticut, was nicknamed "The Silver City." This was because there were a large number of cutlery and related products, which were manufactured in Meriden by companies such as International Silver and Meriden Cutlery. Also, in 1832, Charles Parker and his brother founded a manufacturing factory that produced steam engines, train wheels, printing presses, and piano stools. The factory was named Parker's Meriden Machine Company. During the Civil War, the company was contracted by the Union to produce over 10,000 repeating rifles and 15,000 Springfield rifles.
