County aims to keep mentally ill out of jail

Sebastian County officials are preparing an application, seeking to be approved to set up a crisis stabilization unit where mentally ill people who come into contact with police can be sent to keep them from ending up in jail or prison. Sebastian County is one of four or five entities that state Sen. Jeremy Hutchinson, R-Little Rock, said he's heard may apply for one of the three units that will be established in Arkansas and operated with $5 million that Gov. Asa Hutchinson included in this year's state budget.

FBI report shows Barrow gang stole suits in Fort Smith

An Alma man has been sentenced in federal court to 35 years in prison after he was convicted of conspiring to distribute methamphetamine in the Fort Smith area. A lawsuit has been filed against the city of Fort Smith after the city sent recyclables to the landfill, while charging residents for a monthly recycling fee. The lawsuit, filed by Fort Smith resident, Jennifer Merriott and attorney, Whitfield Hyman, states the city of Fort Smith transported nearly 8,000 tons of recyclables to the landfill instead of the recycling facility.
